William Joseph Hazlitt - Instructor
Who is Bo Kyo Sa Nim William Joseph Hazlitt? He is a 1st Degree Black Belt. He received his
1st Degree Black Belt from Master Steve White in 2005.
William Hazlitt has 13 years experience in the martial arts. He started at America’s Youth Karate
in junior high in 1993. He was introduced to the martial arts when his parents took him to a
class because he was being threatened by a bully at school. Once he started, it wasn’t long
before he realized he wanted to be there not only for self-defense but more for the enjoyment of
what the martial arts had to offer. It was a new excitement for him and something he truly
enjoyed.
This was a new experience for him, being in a new place and having to meet all these new people. At school he was always
shy and wouldn’t interact with others if he could avoid it, but with the martial arts he was put into situations that required him
to interact with his peers. It was in high school when he started to notice people at school he knew from his karate class. It
opened him up from his shyness and allowed him to make new friends and enjoy yet something new that he may not have
been able to do on his own.
The martial arts also challenged him in several ways. It gave him an opportunity to learn
something new. On top of that due to his height he was not able to be paired up with students
his own size. Most of the time, he was required to pair up with some one who had more
experience. To him it seemed scary to be a beginner student and have to go up against
someone who was an advance rank or even a Black Belt instructor. However, in the end it
showed him how to face his fears and take the challenge on full force. This was one of the first
things he learned in the martial arts that he saw could be applied in everyday situations. He
soon realized there would be many more to come.
After sustaining a knee injury he was asked to stop participating in "classes". However, he was
still able to use the martial arts by the way he presented himself in everyday life. He was once
told "You can take the man out of the martial arts, but you can’t take the martial arts out of the man." He took his time off and
when he came back he found out they were not continuing the same style he knew when he left.
A few years past and he moved to Ramona in 1999. In 2000 his younger brother was shown a flyer to a martial arts school in
town. When he was asked if he wanted to continue his training in the martial arts he was a bit reluctant due to the training he
received from his other instructor. After a bit of self-examination, however, he decided to give it a try.
From there he continued his training in the martial arts, in a new way. It entailed more training and a different group of people
to meet. His training moved forward for another six years before he finally accomplished his first long term go of achieving
and earning his Black Belt in Tang Soo Do. From there he became an instructor and began teaching new students what he
once learned and went through so many years ago.
Future Goals:
William’s goals now are to continue teaching new students and further his own training to one day attain the rank of Master.
One other goal he has had is to start a karate school and with this new school in hand most of his goals in life are coming
into play.
"One must come up with new goals once the old ones have been accomplished."
